OK, the 17 VIN decoder has character Weights and a Transliteration Key...

VIN ----- 1 M 8 G D M 9 A _ K P 0 4 2 7 8 8

Transliteration key: values for VIN Decoding
A
:1 B:2 C:3 D:4 E:5 F:6 G:7 H:8 J:1 K:2 L:3 M:4
N
:5 P:7 R:9 S:2 T:3 U:4 V:5 W:6 X:7 Y:8 Z:9

Value ---- 1 4 8 7 4 4 9 1 _ 2 7 0 4 2 7 8 8

Weight --- 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 10 _ 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2

Products 8 28 48 35 16 12 18 10 (CKD) 18 56 0 24 10 28 24 16

What is the "Weights" and "Transliteration Key" formula for the 13 Digit VINs?

Any one know?

Thnx, Oz

Hi there,

Actually, the 17 digit VIN is broken down into different areas and does not correspond in ANY WAY to a number or letter conversion, each means something different. Restraints, engine, manufacturing plant, carline and model are all documented by the VIN.

The 13 digit breakdown is below.

This is out of a 1967 factory service manual.

Thanks for the info on the 13 digit, but you may wish to look at the 17 digit formula...

Hi there,

That 17 digit formula certainly doesnt work for any GM vehicle, after trying it on Corvette, Camaro, Impala and Avalanche.

Simply decode as written, and you will be fine.

The top part is better than the weight/numeric configuration which is ludicrous.

It does ???

Why would you use that 'formula' when you have the VIN break down in any service manual ????

The formula has NO BEARING ON OPTIONS OR VEHICLE DIAGNOSTICS OR EQUIPMENT>

Or are you talking about ONLY VERIFYING THAT A VIN IS A TRUE VIN ?????
